The Carioca
|
The CARIOCA (design 219 Carioca) was designed by Cees Van Tongeren, of Van De Stadt Yacht Design in Holland in 1971.
Over 300 of these yachts were built with a fixed keel, (draft 1,30m) and known as “Oceaan 22” in Holland, Japan and Australia. Cees has personally sailed in IOR races with this yacht in 1975 and 1976. He has also won the 1/8 Ton Cup in Lymington in the UK.
|
A total of 18 Carioca’s with drop keels (draft 0,60m/1,45m)were built in South Africa by Thesen’s of Knysna in the 1970’s.
Although there were other keelboats designs on the vlei, the Carioca was by far the best designed Cruiser/Racer for Hermanus conditions with its unique lifting keel / rudder design and great sailing characteristics.
The first Carioca to be sailed at Hermanus Yacht Club was Wind Song (6) in 1979, owned by Fred Smithers. This was followed by Libra(4), Acushla(2), Spirit of Rio(8), Wind Whistle (17)and Flash Dancer(16).
The last Carioca to come out the mould was “Salome” (18) launched by Robert Jung in 1981.
At present there are some 14 Carioca’s at the club.
